Galaxian (ギャラクシアン) is Namco's first space shooter where the player becomes the pilot to the Galaxip to face the alien forces. It is also the first game in the Galaxian series. After years of research and development, the hardware (circuit board) for the game was created which brings about new visual qualities at the time. The colorful characters, smooth movements, sound and background ambiance offered a new experiences in the arcade market. Upon its release, it became an instant hit and an inspirational pioneer to another benchmark title to come, and has since become one of Namco's most-memorable and successful franchises. The game was released on 1979 for the arcades and it has received a multitude of ports[1].
Game System[]
The player uses the control stick to move the Galaxip to the left and right, and presses the button to shoot beams. The beams cannot be fired in succession until one shot disappears from the screen. Therefore, it requies the needed precision when shooting. There are four types of aliens and each vary in strengths and patterns. The Galboss is a special type of alien that acts as a leader and only two are found in an enemy formation. The Galboss is accomapnied by Red Aliens which makes it difficult to defeat. In turn, the player could get more points from defeating the Galboss and Red Aliens. When the Galboss is defeated the aliens stop attacking momentarily, giving the player the chance to retaliate. If the Galboss escapes the screen while it is alone, it joins the new enemy formation; resulting in 4 Galbosses in the next stage The scores also vary between aliens and more points are rewarded to the player shooting an alien while it's moving. When all aliens are eradicated from the screen, the stage is cleared and the player progresses to the next one. However; if the Galaxip is hit by an alien or by alien fire, the Galaxip explodes and the player loses a life. When the player loses all of the Galaxips, the game ends. [1]
Strangereal-Galaxian Timeline[]
In 2279 [179 A.G.], the United Galaxy comes into contact with aliens (also known as the ETI or Extra-Terrestrial Intelligence). Unlike the UIMS (Unknown Intellectual Mechanized Species) that were encountered in the early 23rd Century (1st Century A.G.), coming into contact with the ETI was an epoch for Galaxians, sadly it was in the form of an intergalactic war. The Galaxian-Galaga War of 79 prevented the Galaxians from understanding the entirety of the aliens at the time[2]. The sheer numbers of the aliens also made it clear that larger vessels of war were of no use for the UGSF to deploy. This led to the creation of their prototype spacefighter called, "Galaxip." This move by the United Galaxy has led to the defeat of the aliens. Since then, this approach has become the standard measure employed by the UGSF for their operations[3].
